Implementing Global Goal for Sustainable Development 16 in Kenya

Goals of the project

The project aims to facilitate and provide access to basic legal services (consultations and case solution) to marginalized people, especially children and youth, women, SMEs and social groups, through the development and provision of MJ4All/HM legal services and awareness raising, and strengthening the organizational capacity and create a (financially) sustainable MJ4All legal infrastructure in Kenya.

More specifically, the project will:

1. Build the capacity and sustainable legal infrastructure of HM to provide basic legal documents and rights to vulnerable communities;
2. Help i) vulnerable children and young adults, ii) marginalized women, and iii) SMEs and productive cooperatives in urban and rural areas access basic legal documents that constitute prerequisites for their socio-economic and political empowerment;
3. Empower target groups to exercise, defend, and promote their socio-economic and political rights recognized by the Constitution, national laws, and international treaties;
4. Improve the access to basic legal rights for all marginalized Kenyans through evidence based sensitization and advocacy targeted at relevant government agencies;
5. Put basic legal empowerment on the agenda of relevant international institutions in Europe, in the context of Sustainable Development Goal 16 “Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels”.


Project outputs

At the end of the project we want to have achieved the following outputs:

  • Improved and strengthened capacity, efficiency and sustainability of Haki Mashinani legal service provision
  • Built a sustainable legal service infrastructure in Nairobi and beyond 
  • Improved existing and developed new legal products for the target groups of the project
  • Raised the awareness of the target group (and the population in general) on their basic legal rights, the necessity of legal documentation and how to protect and claim these rights
  • Provided legal consults and solved legal cases for thousands of people
  • Identified and eliminated a number of obstacles that keep people from accessing their basic legal rights
  • Increased awareness on Global Goal 16 with international institutions and ensure that adequate action is taken to implement Global Goal 16
